Community members meet to protest BU biolab Residents from the South End and Roxbury gathered Monday night at the Paulist Center on Park Street to discuss actions they wish to take against Boston University, which is building a bioterrorism lab on Boston Medical Center’s campus in the South End. About 30 people listened to a panel of three scientists from Boston’s academic community discuss their concerns about the lab. James Stark spoke on behalf of State Representative Gloria Fox (D-Roxbury) about actions taken in the House of Representatives regarding the lab. The legislation, “An Act to Protect the Public and Environment from Select Toxic Biological Agents,” was put forth by Fox because she said she wants to be proactive and not reactive about a lab she thinks is dangerous. The meeting was run by Claire Allen, a representative from Alternatives for Community and Environment. “We are fighting the federal government. We are fighting the Man. Period,” Allen said.
Task force elects new chairs at meeting At its June 1 meeting, the Community Task Force voted and named Bill Richardson and Sandra McIntosh as co-chairs of the committee. Richardson is president of the Fenway Civic Association and McIntosh is a member of the Roxbury community. Richardson and McIntosh will now serve as the official community leaders of the committee, which is examining areas where it feels Northeastern should construct new residence halls. Also at the meeting, members of the task force received booklets detailing Northeastern’s academic and residential buildings. The members are reviewing the booklet before the next meeting at the end of June when the committee is scheduled to examine the university’s physical layout.
