For Northeastern’s proud veterans, the 2004-05 campaign was one of both disappointment and resurgence.
What remained true throughout the league, however, were the strong opinions on the talent, experience and leadership the seniors brought to Husky hockey.
At the Hockey East Championship and Awards Banquet Thursday, that sentiment continued to shine throughout the league. Senior captain/forward Jason Guerriero and goaltender Keni Gibson were named to the league’s first team, while junior forward Mike Morris was named to the league’s second team.
“I think he’s the all-league goalie,” Boston University coach Jack Parker said of Gibson Feb. 27 after a Husky 2-1 victory at Agganis Arena. “There may be some goalies who are arguably better than him in some ways, but they don’t play as many games as he does and they aren’t the stalwart that he is for his team.” Gibson, whose presence between the pipes was influential all year, finished second to Boston College forward Patrick Eaves in e Hockey East MVP voting.
“Obviously the people around Hockey East had a lot of respect for the players on this team,” said 2004-05 Northeastern coach Bruce Crowder. “If they didn’t, you probably wouldn’t have seen the voting the way it came down. Keni Gibson was the runner-up for MVP of league.”
Crowder went on to mention the respect that opponents gained for his seniors, especially as the performers pushed themselves even harder. Guerriero, who played a key role as the team’s captain and tied an NU record for most consecutive games at 145, was the first Husky ever to receive the Len Ceglarski Sportsmanship Award.
Defenseman Tim Judy, who finished at +8 in Hockey East games and +10 in all games, won the Old Hockey Defensive Defenseman Award.
This all came for the Huskies with the second-toughest schedule in the nation, playing against the likes of national powers University of North Dakota and University of Michigan.
“They played Denver twice, they played Colgate twice,” Crowder said. “All the Hockey East games, North Dakota. They know how they stack up against the best in the country and then when you look at the new NCAA report card and we led Hockey East with that with 982 points.” The Husky seniors provided the team with its biggest boost during the Beanpot tournament, where Northeastern advanced to the finals before losing to frequent winner BU.
“[Gibson] left it all out there, like all of our seniors,” Crowder said following the Feb. 14 loss. “For Jay Guerriero, and Donny [Grover] and [Jon] Awe, Timmy Judy, it’s devestating. We knew we’d been playing well and had a good chance to win this hockey game and they didn’t quit. There’s no reason those guys can’t go out of here with their heads as high as possible.”
