The future top two members of the Student Government Association (SGA), slated to take office in less than two weeks, confirmed yesterday they are still “in a process” involving the university and the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution (OSCCR).
Michael Benson, SGA president-elect, and Chad Cooper, SGA vice president-elect, faced OSCCR on June 13 after being summoned on charges having to do with a breach of university computer security and viewing confidential online files. In written statements, Benson and Cooper said they accidentally stumbled across confidential files on the university server, and the problem was reported to the correct Northeastern official.
Cooper and Benson said they received OSCCR’s decision on June 14, and although they declined to reveal what they have been officially sanctioned, both confirmed that the OSCCR process is not yet over.
“I still assert everything I said to be accurate and I am still looking for a resolution to the matter,” Benson said.
Slandah Dieujuste, assistant director of OSCCR, declined to comment on the case, and said OSCCR would “never, ever comment on an individual case.”
According to the Student Handbook, after a decision and/or sanction has been handed down in a case, students reserve the right to file an appeal no more than five business days after the decision date. The handbook also says all appeals will be heard by an appropriate appeals board, made up of members who were not involved in the original hearing.
Students may appeal the decision, or may choose to appeal the sanction by presenting extraordinary circumstances in writing. Once the appeals administrator decides to review the written request, he or she will confer with the appropriate dean of students, the director of OSCCR, and two Student Judicial Board members. The decision the appeals administrator reaches is final.
This week is the first round of orientation for students who will be attending Northeastern in the fall, and traditionally the SGA president-elect who will be serving when they enter the university
formally addresses them in Blackman Auditorium. However, Benson also confirmed that although he is still considered the SGA president-elect, he did not give the speech.
“No, I did not give the traditional speech for the president to give to each incoming class,” Benson said. “I hope to be able to give that address at the next [orientation].”
Benson said when all is said and done and both he and Cooper are completely finished with the process, he will “inform the student body and take appropriate actions at that time.”
