On the field, the girls were playing football; on the sidelines, the men were coaching and cheering them on. The role-reversing powder-puff game marked the start of Greek Week Saturday.
The week is packed with activities planned specifically for the Greek population to have fun together, said Ashley Maneferini, Greek Week chair and member of the Sigma Delta Tau sorority.
“We’re a small population on campus,” she said. “It’s a chance for us to unite and spend a lot of time together.”
Greek Week is important to the Greek community, said Laura Parrillo, the advisor of fraternities and sororities. They have sponsored different events for Northeastern and the surrounding community throughout the year and this is their time to get praised for their involvement, she said.
“It marks the close of the year,” she said. “It is a time for them to be social and competitive with one another and get their recognition.”
It also is a time for the fraternities and sororities to show their pride in their groups, said Shoaib Malik, a sophomore biology major and Kappa Sigma member.
“I’m excited about supporting our chapter,” he said.
This year, the fraternities and sororities are having a “Battle of the Sexes” and they receive points for each event. The winners are awarded on Friday, said Frank Gianpa, co-chair of Greek Week and part of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.
