Fall fashion report

It’s fall in Boston, that special time of year when you aren’t dying of heat stroke or hypothermia. It’s time to change your wardrobe.

The flip flops should be retired, unless you’re one of those people who prefers to wear them year-round, like my roommate from California.

First, I would like to say that I believe fashion is all about self-expression and one should never blindly follow every trend, but perhaps consider incorporating some into your own personal style.

Some of this fall’s biggest trends are:

Minimalism:  Less is definitely more this season, so keep the accessories to a minimum to make simple outfits look effortlessly chic. A sure-fire look will always be a sweater, jeans and flats. Be understated and classic.

Paint the town purple:  The classic little black dress has turned into the little purple dress. This bold color will automatically make you stand out at parties. Once again, don’t over accessorize or it could be a big disaster.

Lace isn’t just for lingerie:  Designer brands like Givenchy, Christian Dior, Valentino and Elie Saab showed pieces with lots of lace for this fall. Lace blouses and dresses are hot items this season. Lace tights, which are great layering pieces, were also all over the runway. Lace is a great way to show a little skin, yet keep it fashionable.

Layer it up:  Chunky knit sweaters are in, but with a twist. Add a belt to your sweater or coat for a trend that will work particularly well in crazy Boston weather. A thick cardigan with jeans, a neutral tee and boots is a cool look that will keep you warm.

Grey area:  Grey is a great neutral tone for accessorizing this fall. Grey boots, bags and shoes have been seen everywhere. I am also a big fan of mixing grey pieces with leather.

Toughen up:  Leather jackets are still in. To pull a look together, try a motorcycle or aviator-inspired bomber. Structure and shape are key, so make sure the jacket fits you well.

The wild side:  Designer houses like Chanel have been featuring faux fur this season. Mixing prints and furs is also a new look seen on runways. Vests and jackets with furs and animal prints can take any simple look to new ferocious levels.

Cover up:  Capes and Ponchos have finally arrived. This is a trend which I’ve been swearing by for the past few years and I am ecstatic that it has finally happened. Use this trend to create a great fashion forward and comfortable look.

Boot camp: Military style is still stealing the fashion limelight. Army green, anoraks, brass buttons, camouflage and military-inspired cardigans are some of the latest takes on this trend.

Remember to always be yourself and be fierce, no matter what you are wearing. If there is a day when you are late to class and absolutely have to wear your pajamas, keep it fabulous. The secret to a great look is attitude.
