Despite junior goaltender Florence Schelling’s14 saves in the third period, the No. 10 Northeastern Huskies were blanked 3-0 by the No. 4 Boston University Terriers at Walter Brown Arena Tuesday night.
Schelling, who earned third star of the game, was faced with 40 shots and made 37 saves that kept the Huskies in the game.
“We are lucky to have her in there,” head coach Dave Flint said following the loss, “For us to have a shot in a game against [BU] she’s got to be good. I knew she was going to see upwards of 35-40 shots.”
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the opening stanza. The shots were fairly even as Northeastern took 10 shots at Terriers goaltender Kerrin Sperry, who made 23 saves o, and BU shot 13 at Schelling.
In the second period, the Huskies defended a late-period power play and found themselves down by a goal when BU forward Holly Lorms notched her sixth of the season. Northeastern went 0-4 on the power play throughout the game.
The Terriers put the game away in the third period when they scored two more goals. Four minutes into the third period, forward Marie-Philip Poulin came into the offensive zone with a burst of speed, dangled around the defense and beat Schelling.
“I told them that we had to get the momentum back,” Flint said. “If we [scored] early in the third, it will put the pressure on them and give us a good chance to win the game. We created some opportunities, some pretty good opportunities, but we just couldn’t capitalize on them. The few opportunities they had in the third they capitalized.”
Throughout the final stanza, there was a lot of traffic in front of NU’s net, and the Terriers took advantage.
Schelling lost her stick making a save and her teammates failed to retrieve it for her or lend their own to the goaltender. Without a stick Schelling was helpless and forward Jenn Wakefield put the puck just past her shoulder at 16:11 to close out the scoring in the game.
The Huskies had plenty of opportunities throughout the game but could not produce. Sophomore forward Casey Pickett, who had the team-high seven shots in the game, had two breakaway chances but could not light the lamp.
The next two games for the Huskies will take place in St. Cloud, Minn., when they take on Wisconsin New Year’s Day, and St. Cloud State the following day.
“The task doesn’t get any easier,” Flint said. “[Wisconsin] is even better than BU. We’re going to have a tough stretch ahead of us.”
