Not long after the two quick goals by Ward and Mueller, Aurard blasted one past Pelletier on the powerplay to extend the lead to four goals. Mueller received a pass from Hobson along the blue line and faked out the defenders with a great shot fake before passing it cross-ice to Aurard at the far post, who quickly fired off a high shot.
Both teams came out strong early with a plethora of scoring chances at both ends of the ice. Second-year goalie Aerin Frankel started in net and came up with some big saves in the opening minutes, despite Providence generating a number of rebound opportunities.
Fourth-year goalie Brittany Bugalski put up another strong performance between the pipes after posting a 39-save gem against Colgate. Her shutout was intact midway through the third period. With about six minutes to go in the game, UNH got on the board after forward Taylor Wenczkowski beat Bugalski with a low shot.
“We were keeping it simple offensively and just focusing on getting shots through. It’s good to see different people on the scoresheet. I still think we need to shoot the puck more, as there are times when we tried to make one too many passes instead of getting the shot off,” Flint said.
“I think the biggest thing today was that we got quality secondary scoring. We depended a lot on our powerplay and our first line in the first couple of games of the season, but it was really nice to see a lot of other players chipping in and getting involved in the offense here tonight,” Carpentino said.
Second-year goalie Aerin Frankel got the start in net for the Huskies, making a 28-save effort to earn her fourth collegiate shutout. The Huskies got on the board about halfway through the first period with a rebound goal on the powerplay by fourth-year forward Kasidy Anderson.
