Spring fashion looks haute

Fashion club prepares for a busy semester

By Hannah Martin, News Correspondent

For the chic-obsessed members of Haute Fashion, 2011 is a period of development and transition.

Haute Fashion is an organization for students interested in designing, modeling, styling or any other aspect of fashion. With much of its executive board graduating, club president and senior finance major Ayana Blue said Haute is looking for a surge of new members to move forward with the group.

Treasurer Juan Garcia, a senior finance major, said Haute is making a concentrated effort to connect with its younger members and establish a clearer sense of the club’s position on the student activities landscape.

First on the list is a fashion show, currently scheduled for April 23 at the Fenway Center, with a theme that the club has yet to announce.

After last year’s “Gaga in Wonderland” production, that sold out more than 250 seats with a hybrid of theatrical fashion and Lady Gaga pop, members agreed they have a lot to live up to.

The focus last year was more on the music then the fashion. Blue said this year they hope to focus more on the styles they showcase.

“[This year’s show] is definitely going to be more about the clothing than last year’s,” Blue said. She plans on getting most of the garments on loan from local boutiques in an effort to support local, New England-based designers.

Junior journalism major and club marketing director, Ryan Payne, said this year’s theme will speak to the emerging trends of spring and summer 2011.

For women that means mismatched prints, floor-skimming lengths and bold brights.

For men, it’s tailored jackets and jeans complemented by bright colored shirts in shades such as fuschia and peach. Men’s lines will also feature clothing that has a touch of biker edge – “the James Dean look,” said senior finance major and vice president Jenn Wong.

As a way of giving back to the community that serves its members, Haute will be collecting donations for a gay rights organization at the fashion show, though Payne said they don’t plan to charge for the show.

Haute is also planning a pre-show cocktail mixer that Wong said should motivate attendants to arrive in a timely manner for the brief, 15-minute show.

Another big addition to Haute’s agenda is a fashion blog that will cover trends nationally, regionally and internationally. Payne said the organization is reviewing applicants of “young, talented, and stylish reporters” for people to run this blog.

“The fashion blog will be fashion trends based from around the world, but with a Northeastern twist,” Payne said. “Meaning, the students running the blog will be out interviewing students and asking their opinions on particular trends.”

Middler music industry major and group member Michael Weferling said having a student-run blog that explores style on campus and at large could be a defining feature for Northeastern.

“[The blog] adds another element – another artistic element – to the school,” he said.

As for their objectives this semester, Blue said the organization is looking to the younger members to take on leadership roles to ensure the organization exists for a long time.

“We’re really looking for leaders and people who are going to be taking over,” Blue said. “We’re just looking to grow. We’re at a period of transition with everybody coming and leaving,”

Wong said the organization is simply trying to put Haute on the map in the student community and show students that taking style risks isn’t scary.

“It’s about reaching out to students looking for different ways to express ourselves,” she said. “It’s free for interpretation.”
