The Northeastern Athletics Department honored former pitcher Greg Montalbano by retiring his number 30 jersey at Friedman Diamond in Brookline before the baseball team’s last game of the season Saturday. Montalbano, a Westborough native, lost his battle with testicular cancer in August 2006.
In his four seasons as a Husky (1997-2000), Montalbano posted a 19-7 record with a 2.55 ERA and 217 strikeouts in 205 innings. Montalbano left Northeastern with the most career strikeouts and was third all-time in ERA and wins.
During his 1999 junior year, Montalbano threw a no-hitter and earned the America East Pitcher of the Year, All-America East, All-New England and All-America awards. After the 1999 season, the Boston Red Sox selected Montalbano in the fifth round (169th overall) of the amateur draft.
Montalbano’s family, Athletic Director Peter Roby, Head Coach Neil McPhee and Associate Director of Athletics Jack Grinold were present for the number retirement ceremony.
