Disciplinary referrals and burglaries rose in 2010, while violent crimes such as rape fell, according to the annual report released this month by Northeastern University Division of Public Safety (NUPD).
The report contains information and statistics from 2008 to 2010 regarding safety, security and fire safety both on and off campus, according to the report.
“While Boston presents unlimited opportunities to experience the advantages of life in a word-class city, we must keep in mind that the potential for crime does exist,” Director of Public Safety D. Joseph Griffin said in the report. “Each of us must assume a personal responsibility by taking precautions to prevent ourselves from becoming a victim.”
The number of incidents of rape or forcible sexual assault on campus that were reported to NUPD or other university officials decreased from five in 2008 to two in 2010. The number of on-campus robberies also went down from eight in 2009 to three in 2010. However, the number of robberies on public property increased from three in 2009 to six in 2010. Burglaries on campus decreased from 24 in 2008 to 16 in 2010.
The number of people arrested by NUPD or Boston Police Department (BPD) for liquor law violations on campus increased from 21 in 2009 to 48 in 2010.
Disciplinary referrals issued by NUPD increased from 17 in 2009 to 37 in 2010. The number of disciplinary referrals by other university officials decreased from 667 in 2009 to 550 in 2010. The number of drug violations also increased from 2009 to 2010.
