Letter: Students should participate in Homecoming

Throughout my past three years at Northeastern, I’ve attended countless student events. From Springfest to dance recitals, A Cappella shows to career fairs – I feel like I’ve seen it all. However, over the years, there has only been one series of events that I think truly appeals to all Northeastern students, regardless of background, major, interests or career path – Homecoming.

I came from a small private school that never had a homecoming, so when I came to Northeastern, I was instantly attracted to the idea – students celebrating being at Northeastern, and alums celebrating their time spent here. With at least one event each day, Homecoming gives all students the opportunity to commemorate the fact that they’re a Husky and make connections with other students and alumni. Because of this, Homecoming’s theme “Connect to the Husky Network” has never been more appropriate. At a time where we’re using dozens of social media sites to try to stay connected to one another, it’s important to remember that we are already part of one of the best and most influential social networks around – Northeastern University.

I urge all of you to take a look at the list of events for Homecoming Week, don your red and black, and remember how lucky we are to attend such a great university. Come cheer on your friends as they run for king, queen or mayor. Decorate a plaster husky with your student group. Get a group of friends together from your floor and participate in trivia night or the Homecoming Hunt. Show your spirit with some of our most dedicated Huskies at any of the athletic events throughout the week, including the men’s basketball home opener. Come to our first annual video competition and see which of our classmates is going to be the next YouTube star. There is something for everyone and no excuse to miss any event (free t-shirts!)

Getting involved in Northeastern Homecoming has really made me appreciate my time here as a student and makes me excited to join the ranks of alumni this spring. I encourage all of you to come out and spend time with your network and remind yourself how great it is to be a Husky.
