Dean appointed to College of Social Sciences and Humanities

Dr. Georges Van Den Abbeele, former dean of humanities at the University of California, Santa Cruz, was appointed the dean of the College of Social Sciences and Humanities, according to an e-mail from the Office of the Provost. He will begin Sept. 15.

Abbeele was recommended to Provost Stephen Director by a committee of 11 people, including Amanda Sabia, vice president for academic affairs for the Student Government Association, a graduate student and nine faculty members.

Before working at the University of California, Santa Cruz, Abbeele worked at the University of California, Davis, and was a co-founder of the California Cultures Initiative (CCI), a program aimed at connecting humanities research and scholars, formerly called the Pacific Regional Humanities Center, according to the program’s website. He was also the director of the Davis Humanities Institute, the organization under which the CCI operates.
