Despite the too-warm-for-December weather, the holiday season is indeed upon us. The News found some great community service opportunities right on our own campus. Huskies can take advantage of these and get in on the spirit of giving. Here, we present a sampling.
Latino/a Student Cultural Center (LSCC) is sponsoring its annual toy drive on campus. This year, the LSCC has decided to support the Elizabeth Stone House, a non-profit serving homeless and in-need families based in Jamaica Plain. Anyone who wishes to participate can buy gifts specifically for someone in need. The LSCC has a wish list with family members’ sizes and you can choose who you wish to sponsor. Check in with Rosa Torres at [email protected] or 617-373-5845 for more information on how you can sponsor someone in need this holiday season. Toys, unwrapped, can be dropped off at the LSCC, located at 104 Forsyth St. Donations accepted until noon Dec. 16.
John D. O’Bryant African American Institute (AAI) is supporting The Mary Eliza Mahoney House Family Shelter of the Dimock Community Health Center this year. The shelter provides emergency shelter to homeless families, permanent housing placement and intensive case management services for those in need. Come out for the Kwanzaa celebration and support the AAI’s cause by donating toys or gift cards. Donations accepted until Dec. 16. Contact Leslye M. Smith at [email protected] or 617-373-5155 for more information.
Christmas in the City (CITC) is an annual program that takes place across the city, with the purpose of providing those less fortunate with Christmas joy. Your Resident Assistants are bringing CITC to you at NU; through the end of finals, a collection jar will be in your building staff office. You can support the cause by stopping by each night between now and Dec. 16 and unloading any spare change kicking around the bottom of your backpack or pocket. Last year, CITC held a banquet with live entertainment, a Winter Wonderland with games, rides, a petting zoo and other kid friendly activities. At the end of the day, each child received a personalized gift from Santa which the child wished for. In addition, CITC collected toys and gifts for nearly 2,000 families who could not be accommodated at the event. Contact your RA for more details.
