Northeastern landed in second place among 178 schools in the University of Indonesia’s GreenMetric Rankings of World Universities, the university announced Wednesday in a news release.
“Through our efforts to advance sustainability system-wide, we have a tremendous opportunity in higher education to influence millions of students, nationwide and worldwide, who will serve as our future decision- and policymakers,” Northeastern Sustainability Program Manager Carol Rosskam said in the release.
International Village and Dockser Hall both have LEED Gold certifications and Northeastern has a food composting initiative. The university is also a partner in the city of Boston’s Hubway bike rental system.
Northeastern moved up in the GreenMetric Rankings from fourth place last year among 85 institutions.
The university was also honored in October as a Mass Save award-winner, the only university among the 15 businesses also recognized. Mass Save, an initiative sponsored by the state’s gas and electric utilities, wants to drastically cut energy usage in Massachusetts and recognizes businesses and organizations making significant steps to conserve energy resources. That award also recognized Northeastern’s energy savings of nearly 10.7 million kilowatt hours annually, or about $1.3 million a year, over the last five years.
