Northeastern teams recognized for academic achievements

Five Northeastern teams were recognized by the NCAA with Public Recognition Awards for being in the top 10 percent of all colleges in academic progress rates, the NCAA announced June 14.

Field hockey, men’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s ice hockey and women’s rowing were recognized with the awards, marking the third consecutive year that at least four Northeastern teams have earned the recognition.

Northeastern received the most awards of any Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) school this season. In addition, 101 student-athletes made the Dean’s List in 2011-12 and 14 Huskies had a perfect 4.0 GPA, according to the athletics department.

Northeastern swimmer qualifies for Paralympics

Junior swimmer Kelley Becherer qualified to represent Team USA in the 2012 Paralympics last weekend at the Paralympic Trials in Bismark, N.D. Becherer also broke two records in the process.

Becherer qualified in the 50-meter freestyle, 100-meter freestyle, 200-meter individual medley and 100-meter breaststroke in the S13 division, which is designated for swimmers with visual disabilities. Her first 50 meters of the 100-meter breaststroke set an American record with a time of 39.03 seconds, and Becherer also set a record in the 400-meter freestyle with a 200-meter split time of 2:11.42 minutes.

This will be Becherer’s third time representing Team USA. She competed in the Pan Pacific Para-Swimming Championships in August 2011 and set a record in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 27.84. She also won the gold medal in the 50-meter freestyle and bronze medals in the 100-meter freestyle and 400-meter freestyle at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics.

The 2012 Paralympic Games will be held in London from August 29 to September 9.

Haselmann named CAA women’s rowing scholar-athlete of the year

Senior rower Greta Haselmann was named the women’s rowing CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the CAA announced this week.

Haselmann was voted the winner of the award by the sports information directors at each CAA school for her performance both on and off the water. Haselmann led the Huskies to the 2012 CAA rowing title and made the Dean’s List five times en route to graduating summa cum laude with a degree in chemistry in May.

In April, Haselmann received the Rowlands Award for being Northeastern’s most outstanding female scholar-athlete.

Quailer signs with Montreal Canadiens

Former men’s hockey forward Steve Quailer will forgo his final year of NCAA eligibility after signing a two-year contract with the Montreal Canadiens, the Canadiens announced June 14.

The financial terms of Quailer’s deal were not disclosed. The Canadiens selected him in the third round and 86th overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

Quailer would have been a fifth-year senior in 2012-13.

Last season, Quailer was second on the team in points (25) and led the team in assists (17) despite missing eight games during the season, including six consecutive contests in February due to a knee injury. He ends his Northeastern career with 21 goals and 63 points in 105 games.

Reid invited to Team USA Evaluation Camp

Sophomore men’s hockey winger Adam Reid will be one of 46 players to participate in the Team USA National Junior Evaluation Camp from Aug. 4 through 11 in Lake Placid, N.Y., USA Hockey announced Monday.

Reid will compete for a spot on the U.S. National Junior Team for the 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship from Dec. 26, 2012, to Jan. 5, 2013, in Ufa, Russia. He represented the United States from 2009-11 as part of the U-17 and U-18 National Team Development Program and scored a combined 7 goals and 15 points.

Reid was Northeastern’s second-highest scoring freshman last season with six goals and three assists and tied for the team lead with two game-winning goals.

Men’s basketball recruits transfer from Saint Francis

Scott Eatherton, a junior center from Saint Francis University in Pennsylvania, will transfer to Northeastern for the 2012-13 season, Saint Francis head coach Rob Krimmel said Monday.

Eatherton started all of Saint Francis’ 29 games last year and led the team in scoring while averaging 14 points and seven rebounds per game.

The Huskies finished the 2011-12 season with a 14-17 record.
