Brown University (4-1) dealt a blow to the women’s soccer teams’ hearts at Parsons Field in Brookline when they broke the scoreless game with under five minutes left to play Thursday night.

Junior forward Mika Siegelman of the Brown Bears sunk the penalty shot at 85:10, handing a 1-0 loss to the Huskies.

“In the second half they were first to the ball,” head coach Tracey Leone said. “They were winning first balls. They were winning second balls. They were winning bouncing balls, and now we were having trouble getting out of our half.”

The Bears were awarded a penalty shot after chaos in the Huskies’ end.

“The player’s back was to the game, so there was really no need to be real aggressive in that situation,” Leone said.

Brown held the edge in the shot column 12-9 and shots on goal 5-2 while sophomore goaltender Paige Burnett had four saves, including deflecting a bullet over the net in the 71st minute,  but the later penalty made it all for nothing.

The Brown goalies, juniors Amber Bledsoe and MC Barrett, only had to make one save each.
Northeastern knocked on the door multiple times in the first half, but missed cross attempts, a header and shots on the net. Senior forward Greta Samuelsdottir and junior midfielder Hanna Terry each tallied three shots for the Huskies.

Leone said the game could be characterized as “a game of two halves.”

“We played very well the first half comma created great chances, pinned them in their end for much of the first half and really had the momentum,” she said.  “Unfortunately, in the second half they were first to the ball.” said Leone.

The Huskies are off to a tough start as they fall to 1-6 on the season but Leone sees them playing well in spots. However, she is convinced that the crucial thing that is missing is a complete game performance.

“We have had some tough games but we need to play a full 90 [minutes] which we have done a few times this season but not consistently enough,” Leone said.

The team has one more non-conference game on Sunday against Albany at Parsons Field at 1 p.m.  Huskies will open Colonial Athletic Association when they take on the Georgia State Panthers on Sept. 21, at 7 p.m. at Parsons Field.
