New computer worm threat prompts PC changes
Changes on NUNET Windows computers have recently been prompted due to a new computer worm threat, according to a myNEU portal announcement. The computer worm outbreak has spread to approximately 10 million computers worldwide, according to the announcement. Known as Downadup or Conficker, it spreads in unpatched Windows computers, portable storage devices and network shares. Last November, the university worked to patch vulnerable Windows machines, the release said, but the worm has since been discovered to be activated through ‘Autorun’ files on USB flash drives. The security policy change attempts to disable the Autorun feature on university-owned Windows PCs. After the policy change, all NUNET users will not be able to automatically install software by inserting a CD/DVD or connecting a thumb drive to a PC. Instruction on how to install software without Autorun can be found on the myNEU announcement. For questions, contact Information Services Help Line at 617-373-4357 or [email protected]
