Four men’s hockey players honored; women’s player nominated for Humanitarian Award
Junior goalie Brad Thiessen was named the Hockey East ITECH Co-Goaltender of the month for January, it was announced by the league yesterday. Thiessen finished the month with a 6-3 record, a 2.22 goals against average and a stellar save percentage of .928. The Aldergrove, British Columbia native was also named Player of the Month in October. Boston University’s Kieran Millan was the other Co-Goaltender of the Month.
Seniors Ryan Ginand, Louis Liotti and Joe Vitale were named semi-finalists for the Walter Brown Award, the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston announced this week. The award honors the best American-born Division I hockey players in New England. Northeastern was the only school to have three players nominated. Liotti, a defenseman, is a plus-eight this year and has tallied three goals and eight assists. Ginand leads the team in scoring with 18 goals and 26 points. His 18 goals are also tops in Hockey East and is third best in the nation. The Milford native was named runner-up for Player of the Month after recording nine goals in a span of 11 games. Vitale, the captain of the Huskies, has four goals and 15 assists so far this season. His 19 total points are good for third on the team. He is also a returning All-New England and All-Hockey East second team selection.
Senior forward Missy Elumba of the women’s hockey team is one of 21 nominees for the Hockey Humanitarian award, it was announced by USCHO. The award is given every year to college hockey’s finest citizen. Elumba was one of eight finalists for the award last year. She spent last summer volunteering in Calcutta, India working for Mother Theresa’s Missionaries of Charity. The finalists for the award will be announced in mid-February and the award winner will be announced during the Men’s Frozen Four April 10 in Washington D.C.

Men’s basketball BracketBuster announced; team receives votes in Associated Press Top 25 poll
The men’s basketball team drew Wright State for this years’ ESPNU BracketBusters event to take place Saturday, Feb. 21. Northeastern will travel to Dayton, Ohio to battle the Raiders in the seventh year of the event. The time of the game along with the television assignment will be announced Feb 9. As part of the agreement, Wright State will play a return game at Matthews Arena next season.
NU also’ received three votes in the Associated Press Top 25 poll this week, it was announced Monday. This marks the first time the Huskies have received votes in the poll since the 1986-87 season. The collegeinsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll currently ranks the Huskies at No. 10.
