“I don’t want to freak you out, but I think I may be the voice of my generation. Well, at least the voice of a generation,” Hannah Horvath said in the very first episode of HBO’s “Girls.”
And she was right, she is – especially in our fashion world.
As we tunnel into a new year, all of us “Ladies” have recently been star-struck by the work of Lena Dunham in her role of Hannah in this Golden Globe-winning show. Through the first season of “Girls,” we followed the lives of Hannah and her best friends, Marnie, Jessa and Shoshanna – not only through the heartache of broken relationships, complicated friendships and struggles to pay rent – but also through the diverse fashion trends of each character’s wardrobe.
With each of the main characters sporting a distinctly different look from the rest, we have the opportunity to see styles that fit anyone’s taste for fashion and raise the standards for the looks of this year.
So “listen, Ladies.” Here’s the breakdown:
Hannah:
With bold printed baby doll dresses, high-waisted skirts and cozy cardigans, Hannah is a typical style icon of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Her fashion sense tends to attract lots of stripes, plaid and color blocking pieces, usually paired off with Mary Jane type shoes. Hannah is not afraid to play around with patterns and has similar taste to designer Marc Jacobs, with her vintage spirited wardrobe. Although she takes enough time to plan an acceptable outfit, her best friends will always complain about her not “fixing her shiny forehead.”
Marnie:
Marnie’s classic, feminine dresses and suit jackets would make one think that she stole them right out of Jackie Onassis’ closet. Her style is neat and timeless, pairing bright colors and graphic dresses with tailored neutral blazers and trench coats. Stores like J.Crew, Banana Republic and Ann Taylor are just the places you would probably find her shopping. It’s not until the last episode, during Jessa’s wedding, that we see Marnie uncoil her uptight attitude and structured wardrobe for a look that Hannah’s ex-boyfriend can only describe as “J Lo at the Grammy’s.”
Jessa:
Jessa does what she wants, and that shows through her clothing choices as well. Her mix of feminine and masculine fashion styles compliment each other through flowing kimonos, floor-length sheer dresses and long men’s style blazers. Jessa isn’t afraid to take risks with her dark lipsticks and feathered black dresses. Who wouldn’t want to dress like that when you have a “face like Brigitte Bardot and an ass like Rihanna?”
Shoshanna:
The only baggage this girl carries besides her virginity is a heavy trunk of great clothes. The first time we are introduced to this “girl-next-door,” she is wearing a Juicy Couture jumpsuit and can’t stop talking about her love for “Sex and the City.” With colorful button-up dresses, frilled sleeves and splashes of hot pink with graphic skirts, Shoshanna would be happy shopping any day in Bloomingdales. Just make sure to tell her when your wedding will be so she won’t show up in white.
