Conor Larkin’s was packed with the Husky faithful Saturday afternoon and there’s a good chance not many of them will be converted to lacrosse fans.
Conor’s, and Qdoba were the two establishments hosting viewing parties for the men’s hockey team’s NCAA first round matchup with Cornell.
But the feed of the game on ESNPU was delayed for several minutes as the Johns Hopkins and North Carolina lacrosse game went into overtime.
However, the Tar Heels scored shortly into the first overtime, drawing a loud cheer from the packed bar, which had lines going out the door for most of the game.
With 323 confirmed guests on the Facebook group, fans packed Conor’s far before the puck dropped, eager to cheer on the Huskies.
‘I had decent expectations for the regular season,’ said Eric Lawless, a middler math major. ‘It’s been better then I hoped for. I’m really happy to see the success they’re having.’
While the creaky rafters and confined seats help make Matthews Arena a boisterous arena when packed, the close quarters in Conor’s served the same effect, as Husky fans remained loud all game. The crowd even got some of the familar DogHouse cheers going.
The bar erupted after senior defender Louis Liotti scored to give NU a 1-0 lead in the first period, taunting Cornell goalie Ben Scrivens with the ‘Sieve, you suck!,’ chant.
The crowd cheered just as loud when a feature on junior goaltender Brad Thiessen was shown between periods.
The fans were joined by former Husky great Art Chisolm, who played for NU from 1958-61. In 72 games, he had 182 points, which is fourth all-time in school history.
Despite the team’s success entering the tournament, Husky fans couldn’t help but recall the team’s shortcoming in big games throughout the season.
‘It’s been painful,’ graduate student Jason Evanish said of the Huskies’ failures in important games, comparing them to the pre-2004 Red Sox before the start of the game.
‘Hopefully we can break that streak [against Cornell.]’
Unfortunately for Husky fans, a 3-2 win by Cornell ensured that will have to wait until next season.
