My name is Edward Hammer, I am the president of Huskies for Israel (HFI), an active member of Northeastern’s Jewish community and a brother of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. It is with these credentials that I say how appalled I was to hear that the president of Students for Justice in Palestine, Max Geller, was on the receiving end of a death threat. To say that Max and I have differing beliefs and opinions is an understatement, but regardless of our past differences, threatening the life of another human being is beyond all moral decency.
Huskies for Israel serves to “positively impact discourse around Israel by educating the Northeastern University community through events, initiatives, and outreach” (HFI Mission Statement) and unfortunately this discourse is brought such negative repercussions to a member of Northeastern’s community. On behalf of HFI I strongly condemn any threat of violence towards one of our own community members and I sincerely hope that all members of Northeastern’s community can feel safe to voice their opinions on campus and I hope that discourse on sensitive subject may be fruitful and educational for all involved.
Max, know that despite our political differences, I stand against anyone who would threaten the life of another person. I know that in the end, both of our organizations seek a viable and sustainable peace in the near future and I for one, would be ecstatic to see a two state solution come to fruition.
