See the city from a new perspective at Higher Ground, Boston’s first rooftop farm. Occupying 55,000 square feet atop the Boston Design Center, the farm grows an assortment of produce including greens, tomatoes and herbs, which are then sold to nearby restaurants. Support the local produce movement and learn more about agrarian operations by helping out at the final volunteer day of the season. Saturday’s tasks include transporting plant debris to be taken to City Soil for composting. Watch Northeastern’s finest musicians duke it out at the Homecoming Battle of the Bands. This year’s lineup features Kid/Astro, Mark Gilday Jr., Empyrean, Nick and his Friends, The D-Line and Modes. Judges Kayley Kravitz of the Office of Student Affairs, Kier Byrnes of afterHOURS, Casey Mulcare of the Center for Student Involvement and Husky Gone Wild DJ Raquel Robinson will determine which band wins the chance to perform a set on WRBB and be featured in the online edition of Tastemakers Magazine. The audience gets a say too, choosing who will be featured in the online edition of WOOF magazine and get preferred seating to Donald Glover with Reggie Watts. Take a listen to this voice-only style of music at the second annual Best of the Northeast Region a cappella showcase. Take a journey into the past at the Old-Time Music Party. Popular during the eras of the revolutionary and civil wars, this style of music originated in the southern Appalachian region and has since been revived by old music enthusiasts. It mainly features fiddles and banjos, but also includes the guitar and cello, among other string instruments. The event is open to any musicians who wish to participate, as well as guests who come just to listen or dance. Ommm my goodness. It’s free yoga at the Boston Public Library. These weekly classes are part of the Boston Moves for Health initiative started by Mayor Thomas M. Menino, which aims to bring more accessible fitness options to the citizens of Boston and tracks the total pounds lost by those participating. Led by professional instructors, the classes specialize in the basics of Hatha yoga.
