Column: The musical potential of 2014

By Raffaela Kenny-Cincotta, News Staff

Last year was arguably one of the best years for music in the last decade. Kanye declared himself a musical savior with “Yeezus,” Arcade Fire showed their fun-loving side with the long-awaited “Reflektor,” British electronic duo Disclosure broke onto the scene with their debut album “Settle,” and with “Random Access Memories,” Daft Punk reminded us that they are essentially musical robot gurus. All in all, a pretty stellar year. Now as we embark into 2014, the musical possibilities seem endless.

Featured on some of the biggest hits of the past year, Pharrell was one of the most prominent musical figures in 2013. Between Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky,” Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” and the innovative 24-hour music video for his single “Happy,” Pharrell was practically inescapable this past year. Despite this, the 40-year-old singer/rapper/producer has not released a studio album since 2006’s “In My Mind.” It has been confirmed, however, that Pharrell’s next album will be released at some point in 2014 by Columbia Records. Columbia’s Chairman/CEO Rob Stringer has been quoted saying that “[Columbia Records is] preparing to launch Pharrell as a global solo superstar in 2014.”

Additionally, rumors have been swirling that songstress Adele is spending some time in the studio and getting in touch with producers and musicians. With no release date or title announced for a 2014 album, this may be speculation, but Adele has been quoted saying that she will pen her third studio album only when she has “something to sing about.” After giving birth to a baby boy in October 2012, one could assume that the thrills and chills of motherhood will inspire the British singer to create some new music in 2014.

Finally, Flying Lotus, real name Steven Ellison, confirmed last December via Twitter that his fifth studio album is “almost ready for mixing,” sending music nerds into a frenzy of excitement. Although a Flying Lotus album may not be as financially successful or widely known as a Pharrell or Adele LP, it is just as eagerly awaited by music fans. Known for his unique mix of experimental and traditional hip-hop production, Flying Lotus has been praised by critics for his innovative sound. His new album is poised to be a follow-up to his extremely well-received 2012 release “Until the Quiet Comes,” and Flying Lotus has also confirmed the potential for a collaboration between himself and music pioneer Herbie Hancock. As we all push forward into 2014, it’s a guarantee that some great music is going to be released. I’ll just be over here white-knuckling the wait for that FlyLo/Herbie Hancock collab.
