NU receives grant for library improvements
On June 12, Northeastern University Libraries were presented with one of seven EMC Heritage Trust Grants for 2009, making them the only recipient in the United States. The $15,000 grant from EMC Corporation, started in 1979 by Northeastern graduates Richard Egan and Roger Marino, will go toward digitizing, creating metadata and making approximately 1,725 images and documents from the La Alternativa and Carmen Pola collections available on the Internet, according to an NU Libraries press release. La Alternative is a newsletter published by El Colectivo Puertorriqueno de Boston and Carmen Pola is a Latina community activist whose collection contains materials relating to Roxbury United for Families and Children. Online access to these materials, which researchers must currently visit the university to use, will allow Northeastern Libraries to serve a vastly larger demographic and will contribute to Northeastern Libraries’ legacy of preserving and documenting minority voices, according to the NU Libraries press release.
