Despite losing in the first round of this year’s NCAA tournament, former Husky goaltender Brad Thiessen managed to get his hands on a championship trophy.
Thiessen, who was signed by the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins April 3, celebrated a Stanley Cup championship in Detriot June 12. As a member of the Penguins’ practice squad during the playoffs, Thiessen was in uniform as the Penguins defeated the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 in game seven of the Stanley Cup Finals and held the cup during the postgame celebration.
Two other former Northeastern men’s hockey players, Jay Heinbuck and Jim Madigan, celebrated the Penguins’ victory on the ice with Thiessen. Heinbuck, a player for NU from 1983 to 86, is a current director of amateur scouting for the Penguins. Madigan, who played from 1982 to 85, is an amateur scout for the Penguins and an associate dean and current director of development in Northeastern’s College of Business Administration.
