Assistant track and field coach Zara Northover proved she can still compete in the sport she coaches.
Northover won the shot put event at the Jamaica National Senior Championship in Kingston, Jamaica, July 1. She won with a throw of 53 feet, 4.5 inches.
Northover, who holds dual citizenship in the United States and Jamaica, is trying to qualify for Jamaica’s World Championship team. Northover threw the shot put 52 feet in the Bejing Olympics last summer, the first Northeastern alumna to appear in an Olympic track and field event.
As a competitor for the Huskies from 2002 to 2007, Northover set new standards of success a the shot put. She won four New England titles, four America East titles, four Eastern Collegiate Athletic Association titles, two Colonial Athletic Association titles, and set the school distance record with a throw of 55 feet, .75 inches. She competed for an NCAA championship five times.
Northover became an assistant for the track and field team in 2007.
