On Tuesday, Blackman Auditorium was graced by the presence of Saturday Night Live (SNL) comedian Brooks Wheelan and local comic Andrew Mayer.
The stand-up event was hosted by the Council for University Programs (CUP), which is also responsible for bringing Spring Fest to Northeastern.
Wheelan’s comedy was anecdotal and observation-based, such as his quip about the Au Bon Pain in the Marino building.
“I got a tomato soup and a grilled cheese — for a little less than a car payment,” Wheelan said.
During his act, Wheelan paced the stage in attempts to find what he called the funniest spot on stage. He then demonstrated the impersonations he used for his SNL auditions, which he claimed were surprisingly easy.
Wheelan concluded his act by running through a list of skit ideas he had come up with for SNL that were never aired. They included, “Olympic diver who never learned to swim … advice from a guy in a mesh tank-top … [and] a member of the Titanic band who doesn’t want to go down with the ship.”
Mayer, who is a prominent member of the Allston comedy scene, also elicited a lot of laughs. The curly-haired Massachusetts native talked about a myriad of subjects, such as bears and reverse pedophiles. He related a story about a bumper sticker he had recently seen: “[It read] ‘Enough Sexual Abuse’ — which doesn’t really come out as pro or con.”
“We had a great turnout,” president of CUP Gretchen Claffey, said. Claffey, a senior music industry major, said the event was nearly sold out, and close to 800 people had purchased tickets. “People from SNL are always a great turnout.”
CUP has previously organized performances by Seth Meyers and Jimmy Fallon, said Claffey.
