Northeastern is a school in transition. It is shrugging off the appearance as a commuter school it had for so long and it is reinventing itself. All around campus you see a school trying to build a sense of community and connection between the students, yet when you show up at any of the school-run or sponsored events, no one is there, with the exception of Springfest.
I chalk this up to a lack of on-campus communication. Right now the main way to inform the student body that there is some sort of event going on is through hanging plastic signs that probably aren’t cheap, or by writing it in chalk on the ground, which is hard to read nine times out of 10.
The solution that I would propose is a series of community bulletin boards. There are currently bulletin boards down in the tunnels below campus but really, how often are people really down there? I think these bulletin boards need to be permanent, free-standing and outside where the students are. These types of boards are a common sight on campuses around the country and even around the city.
While I would never suggest that we copy Harvard, they do have a fairly good example of what I am talking about. There are metal signs with a cork center placed around campus. On these community bulletin boards, there are ads for the a capella group, a club sports team and pretty much anything a student wants their fellow students to know about.
This is what Northeastern needs in order to help take it to the next level, and really build on the sense of community it is now trying to instill. I know I do not speak for the entire student body when I say this, but I want to go to community events, if I only knew they where going on. I feel this will make me closer to my fellow students because I will be connected to things that we are interested in, will make us more proud to be Northeastern University students with a willingness to support anyone else who dons the red and black.
