From classics like “Chunky Monkey” and “Cherry Garcia” to wilder creations such as the potato chip-laden “Late Night Snack,” Vermont-based ice cream maker Ben & Jerry’s has been on the cutting edge of the frozen dessert market since its inception in 1978. Once again, they have revolutionized the game with their new product line, fittingly dubbed the “Cores,” which are now available at Shaw’s supermarket.

Late last month, Ben & Jerry’s debuted this new ice cream family, featuring five new flavors. What differentiates these new delectable creations from past Ben & Jerry’s offerings is the presence of a molten core of either fudge, caramel or raspberry jam that runs down the center of each pint. Instead of these ice cream sundae toppings residing solely on top, the “Cores” provide customers those delicious supplements all throughout the pint.

No longer do those desiring the tasty refreshment of a sundae have to worry about the disproportioned mess of hot fudge, ice cream and any preferred add-ins. The “Cores” have solved that dilemma with which ice cream fanatics are all too familiar. With a spattering of bite-sized succulent treats throughout the new concoction divided by a thick gooey center, the configuration of ingredients ensures that every bite delivers the sweet, signature, satisfying taste for which Ben & Jerry’s is known.

Of course, someone enjoying this new dessert does not have to eat all the sugary components in perfect portions each mouthful. Another great aspect of this new Ben & Jerry’s invention is the ability to enjoy two different ice cream flavors either together, or apart. All but one of the new creations have two different flavors separated by the fudge, caramel or raspberry band running down the middle. One could attack the whole pint with a large, sweeping spoonful or methodically dismantle the carton one strategic nibble at a time.

Without further ado, here is a quick rundown of the premier “Cores” flavors. The first five include “Hazed & Confused” (chocolate and hazelnut ice cream with fudge chips and a fudge core), “Peanut Butter Fudge” (chocolate and peanut butter ice cream with mini peanut butter cups and a peanut butter fudge core), “Salted Caramel” (sweet cream ice cream with blonde brownies and a salted caramel core), “That’s My Jam” (chocolate and raspberry ice cream with fudge chips and a raspberry core), and finally, “Karamel Sutra” (chocolate and caramel ice cream with fudge chips and a caramel core).

Though there are only five flavors currently, the “Cores” set a blueprint for future creations that the self-titled “flavor gurus” at Ben & Jerry’s will most certainly get creative with.
