Former men’s hockey head coach Ben Smith and former women’s hockey star Shelley Looney were elected to the United States Hockey Hall of Fame July 29.
In 1994, Smith led the Huskies to one of only four NCAA Tournament bids in school history. During his years with Northeastern, 1991 to 1996, his record was 70-92-18. He left to coach the United States Women’s National team in 1996 and won three Olympic medals, including gold in 1998.
Looney played for the Huskies for four seasons from 1990 to 1994, registering 127 career points on 68 goals and 50 assists. She also won two medals for the national team in both the 1998 and 2002 Olympics. Looney ranks 10th all-time in scoring at Northeastern and was inducted into Northeastern’s Hall of Fame in 1999. In 1994, her senior season at NU, she was named Eastern College Athletic Conference Player of the Year. During her USA Hockey career she played in 151 games, scoring 61 goals and 136 points.
