The Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) announced Monday freshman forward Nicola Graham is the CAA Rookie of the Week.
Graham is the second Husky to win the award this season.’ Freshman Crystal Poland won the award Sept. 8.
Having played in the team’s first seven games, Graham is tied for second on the team with two goals, both coming in consecutive games against Boston University and Providence. Graham is also second on the team in both shots, 19, and shots on goal, 11.
With the score tied at 1-1 in the first half against BU on Sept. 13, Graham got the Huskies back on top with a goal at 7:32.
Her goal against Providence Sept. 16 came in the 35th minute and gave the Huskies a 1-0 advantage against the Friars. The Huskies eventually went on to win the game, which marked the fourth straight victory for NU. The streak ended Saturday when the team lost to No. 11 Massachusetts.
‘Nicola is a great kid to have in the program,’ said head coach Cheryl Murtagh. ‘She has a positive attitude, good skills, and she works hard.’
Hailing from North Vancouver, British Columbia, Graham was selected as a first-team All-Star for her high school field hockey team in 2007 and 2008. In 2007, she led her team, West Vancouver Secondary, to a perfect record of 27-0.
‘Having her means a lot for our confidence as a team that we can put the ball in the net,’ Murtagh said. ‘She’s a goal scorer and she makes sure she always goes to the goal hard. She adapted extremely well to being at Northeastern and she appreciates the opportunity that she has here to play on a team like this.’
The team’s next game is Friday, Sept. 25′ at Old Dominion at 5 p.m.
