Despite being outshot in both games, the women’s hockey team split its weekend series against Maine to remain tied for first place in Hockey East.
The ninth-ranked Huskies (8-2-2, 4-1-2-1 Hockey East) stifled Maine (3-9-2, 1-5-2-1 Hockey East) Saturday, scoring five goals on 30 shots to win 5-1. Sunday, Maine silenced the Huskies, who were shut out 1-0 for the second time this season.
Sophomore goaltender Florence Schelling did her part playing in net for Northeastern, stopping 67 of 69 shots total during both games at Matthews Arena, but the Huskies couldn’t find the net in Sunday’s loss. The loss ended the team’s six-game unbeaten streak.
‘We just didn’t score any goals,’ said co-interim head coach Lauren McAuliffe. ‘And you don’t win a lot of hockey games when you don’t score any goals.’
In Saturday’s win though, the offense seemed to click, and the five goals scored marked the highest goal-total of the season.
The five points were tallied by freshmen, including two goals from forward Kelly Wallace. Wallace, who played in her third game of the season, scored on her first collegiate shot.
‘She’s a really good playmaker,’ said junior forward Alyssa Wohlfeiler. ‘She’ll be able to set up our top goal scorers.’
Wohlfeiler added two goals of her own, including the game-winner, and picked up an assist. She poked home a pair of rebounds and leads the team with six goals.
‘We were getting pucks to the net and a lot of our goals were rebound goals,’ she said. ‘We work a lot in practice on shooting to have a rebound come out. It really paid off on Saturday.’
Schelling turned away 32 of 33 shots to seal the victory for the Huskies. The Switzerland native continues to lead the nation in both goals-against average (0.81) and save percentage (.970).
Northeastern promoted the ‘Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer’ campaign on Sunday. Fans had a chance to donate through merchandise sales, auctions, raffles and other special events. Hockey East has raised more than $90,000 through the program over the past three years.
Some players wore special pink equipment in honor of the fight against breast cancer.
During the game, Schelling was near-perfect again, this time stopping 35 of 36 shots. She earned Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honors for the third straight week, but her performance wasn’t enough for Northeastern. Maine goaltender Brittany Ott saved all 34 shots the Huskies took to earn her first shutout of the season.
‘There are a lot of good goalies in this league,’ said McAuliffe. ‘You aren’t going to score a lot of goals on the first chance. Usually it’s the second and third chances that you get to put the puck in the net and we just did not bury them today.’
The Huskies committed six penalties in the game, tying a season-high. Penalties and turnovers were a big part of the loss, McAuliffe said.
‘Our biggest issue was the turnovers,’ she said. ‘All over the ice we were not very careful with the puck. Some of the best scoring chances that you have come off the sloppy turnovers.’
The Huskies will take on Providence on the road Friday at 7 p.m. Both teams are tied for first place in the conference with 11 points.
‘Anytime you play a Hockey East opponent it’s a huge game,’ McAuliffe said. ‘As we get into January-February you’re going to see a pretty tight Hockey East race and we want to stay on top. Every game we play in this league is huge for us.’
