One of the greatest perks of attending Northeastern University is its proximity to Fenway Park, but buying Red Sox tickets isn’t always possible on a college budget. However, the Red Sox organization is now offering $9 standing room tickets to high school and college students in Boston.
“It’s really important for us to have college students as a part of Fenway Park,” Adam Grossman, senior vice president of marketing for the Red Sox, said. “The relationship between Fenway and Boston students goes way back, and we’d like for them to take a piece of the Red Sox with them wherever they go.”
Expanding audience members to include the younger generation is an ongoing effort.
“We’re always looking for more fans and to widen our embrace,” Grossman said. “It is an important demo[graphic] for us.”
Northeastern students are showing interest in the inexpensive tickets, including Hope Oje, a sophomore communication studies major at Northeastern.
“I definitely think it’s good because I realize that students don’t always have that much money to spend on things they want, especially once you factor in everything they have to buy in college,” Oje said. “I’m glad that they are relatively cheap compared to what the retail price would be.”
Because many young adults only live in Boston for a few years during college, the organization hopes to give students “access to Fenway while they’re here,” Grossman said.
The tickets are first come, first served on the Red Sox website, redsox.com/student. Tickets can be purchased on the website and will appear as digital tickets on the Major League Baseball mobile application. Once at Fenway, students can show their digital tickets and student ID to be admitted.
The student deal was introduced at the beginning of this season and has already made an impact on the audience.
“It’s been well-received,” Grossman said. “We’re hoping to do this for seasons to come.”
