The Northeastern men’s soccer team began Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play with two overtime ties to Drexel and Delaware. Goalie Sergio Saccoccio allowed just one goal in the games and passed Allen Lewis to become the career minutes leader.
The Northeastern News Player of the Week recorded his third shutout of the season, with three saves, in the team’s 0-0 tie against Delaware. Saccoccio, a Holtsville, N.Y. native, allowed one goal against Drexel late in the second half on a deflection off a Northeastern player.
“The goal was near the end of the game so it was annoying,” Saccoccio said. “We didn’t let down in overtime though, unfortunately we weren’t able to score again.”
The Huskies went into CAA play with a 1-5-1 record but looked to turn the season around against the new conference.
“We look at starting the new conference as starting a new season. We have zeroes across the board and it’s like a second chance,” Saccoccio said.
The team’s trouble scoring has been the difference for the Huskies this season. They have only been able to score five goals, while allowing 16.
“It gets really frustrating but I know they are doing what they can and I have to just do the same,” Saccoccio said.
In the Huskies’ 1-0 loss to Holy Cross, Saccoccio surpassed goalie Allen Lewis’ (1998-01) record of 6,155 minutes logged. He began the season in second place with 5,652 minutes. He also moved into second place in all-time saves with 277 career stops.
“I didn’t even know about the minutes until after the game when someone approached me about it,” Saccoccio said. “I was just lucky to have been able to come in and play all four years.”
