The Northeastern volleyball team was swept by Hofstra and UConn, but was able to get a win against Fairfield in the midst of three weekend road trips.

“Being home is going to help us. We’ve had a long stretch on the road and it is wearing on us,” said coach Ken Nichols.

UConn swept Northeastern last night 3-0 (30-16, 30-18, 30-21). Northeastern had trouble hitting in game one and was unable to ever gain a lead. They were on the wrong side of a late 20-5 run in game two despite leading early in the frame. NU kept game three close with a tie at 16 before UConn pulled away, with three consecutive points from the service line.

“We started really shaky but we picked up in the final two games. We still aren’t executing, though, so we can’t keep leads,” said sophomore Kira Batura.

Freshman Lauren DeTurk and senior Brandie Genibrel each had six kills. Genibrel also picked up 15 digs.

The Huskies swept non-conference Fairfield Sunday 3-0 (30-27, 30-27, 30-28). Junior Whitney Turner had 13 kills and a team-leading .462 attack percentage to lead Northeastern.

“She got hurt in the second game against Hofstra and had to come out,” Nichols said. “But with a little tape Sunday she had a career match.”

In game one the teams were tied at 24 before alternating the next six points for a 27-27 tie. NU rallied for the next three points to go up 1-0. Game two mirrored the first game with a tie at 27. Genibrel and junior Ashley Reeves registered a kill each and a Fairfield attack error gave the Huskies the game.

Northeastern took a quick 5-0 lead in game three and never trailed in the 30-28 victory. The five-point lead was the largest the Huskies would enjoy as the Stags fought to tie at 22. The Huskies won the game on a Turner kill.

Junior Chelsea Carroll had 26 assists in the match and Genibrel had 16 kills. Batura had 12 digs and three service aces.

CAA opponent Hofstra swept the Huskies 3-0 (30-25, 32-30, 30-16) Saturday.

Northeastern never led in game one and was never closer than three points. Game two was the Huskies’ best of the day, pushing Hofstra to game point. The game was tied 15 times before the Pride rallied for six of the last seven points to take the frame. Hofstra carried the momentum to game three, taking a 19-9 lead. The Huskies never recovered, losing 30-16.

Senior Larissa Adomat had a season-high 13 kills.

The Huskies continue their travels on the road at George Mason and James Madison on Friday and Saturday, respectively. The games start at 7 p.m.
