Starting for a team ranked 10th in the country and making a save in the strokeoff against Harvard to help the Huskies to their record 11th consecutive victory is not what Colleen Duffy expected as she entered her second month as a freshman on the field hockey team.
“I thought I was going to redshirt this year because I am young and there were already two goalies on the team,” Duffy said.
The Katonah, N.Y. native made seven saves against Harvard last Wednesday as the Huskies needed a strokeoff to defeat the Crimson. Duffy stopped Harvard’s first penalty attempt to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. The two teams matched each other’s shots for the next three rounds, but the first save was the difference in the 3-2 win, earning her The Northeastern News player of the Week honors.
“It was one of the most nerve- wracking points in my career,” Duffy said. “I had to not think about it and just react.”
Duffy added four more saves to her season in the team’s 5-3 victory over Drexel, which set a new school record of 12 consecutive wins. The three goals are the most she has allowed since she earned the starting position in mid-September.
“Drexel was strong offensively ,but I just didn’t have a great game. Two of the goals were on rebounds off my pads and I should have gotten to them. The other one was just a good goal,” she said.
Duffy has 14 saves on the season and is averaging 3.5 saves per game. She is fourth in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) with a 1.25 goals-against-average and her 14 goals allowed place her sixth in the CAA.
“I don’t have a huge number of saves on the season, but that is a testament to how good the midfield and defense are. There aren’t always a lot of saves for me to make,” Duffy said.
