Former field hockey standout Diana Nelson took in Sunday’s game at Sweeney Field and visited her old teammates while checking in on the progress of the current Husky team.
“I usually keep up with them on the Internet,” Nelson said. “I talk to them online; they’re busy here, and I’m busy there, but I talk to them when I get the chance.”
She watched Sunday’s Senior Day game in which the Huskies snapped a three-game losing streak with a victory over William ‘ Mary.
“They look good, and they played well together. I think it’s a big win for them, coming off a few losses, and good for [the seniors] to have their final game at home and going away with a gift,” she said.
Nelson, who graduated in 2005 with 17 shutouts and a 1.08 career goals against average in her collegiate career, is now a goalkeeper for the U.S. National Team.
Nelson finished off her senior season with the Huskies by playing in 22 games, while allowing just 22 goals in 1,533 minutes. In saving 100 shots, Nelson compiled an .820 save percentage. She had an 18-4 record with seven shutouts.
“I played in our game against Canada in August,” Nelson said. “We won that game. Other than that, I gotta work my way up the ranks.”
Nelson led the Americans to a 6-0 win in that Sept. 4 matchup. Right now, she is preparing for another matchup with the Canadians, this time with much higher stakes.
“It’s us against Canada, a six-game series in Rome,” Nelson said. “It’s the World Cup qualifiers.”
