Whitney Shean spent her weekend at Virginia Beach, but she didn’t come back with a tan or any boardwalk souvenirs. She came back with a swollen ankle and second place.
Shean and the field hockey team traveled to Norfolk, Va., to play in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament. They defeated Hofstra 3-2 in the semifinals with Shean scoring all three of the Huskies’ goals. Shean is The Northeastern News Player of the Week.
She scored the game’s first goal, eight minutes into the first half. Hofstra tied the score and Shean answered with her second unassisted goal of the game. The Pride again tied the score and it remained that way into the second half.
Shean earned the hat trick and gave the Huskies the last goal 15 minutes into the second half.
“The third goal was off a corner. I pushed the ball to the stopper and [Ashley D’Ambra] got it back to me to score the goal,” Shean said. “That game was a dogfight from the beginning, but it was the first time we combined to play 70 minutes and win.”
In the championship game, Old Dominion kept Shean and the Huskies from scoring and handed Northeastern second place in the 3-0 loss. In the game Shean suffered an ankle sprain that left her limping even after the team returned home.
“I was off the play and a girl tripped me. It was such a physical game, but we know how to use our bodies and we were handing it back to them as well,” she said.
While the Huskies did not earn a bid to the NCAA tournament, Shean was adamant she would not have let the swelling keep her from playing on the field.
“I don’t know if it would be OK to play on it, but I would make it OK. I would play,” Shean said.
Shean was named to the CAA All-Tournament Team along with senior Lauren Edelmeier and freshman Ashley Bascetta. Shean and Edelmeier were also named to the All-CAA first team.
Shean led the team with 49 points and 22 goals this season. She also had six game-winning goals and a .345 shot percentage ,which lead the team.
