Student’s fame now a reality

NEW YORK – On the kitchen counter of Andy Nikic’s New Hyde Park home yesterday lay a handwritten note from Nikic’s stepdad:

“Andy, please take out your hockey equipment and leave the car for me so I can go to work.”

On the fridge was his mom’s Christmas wish list, with “Andy to succeed” written beside No. 2.

Although the hockey equipment is still inside the trunk of the car, his mom’s wish list is now a little shorter – her son just landed his own MTV reality series.

Sitting on a cream-colored leather couch watching the Islanders game Friday afternoon, the middler communications major received a phone call from comedian Andy Dick.

“I have some bad news for you,” said Dick, a judge on “The Reality Show.” “The bad news is you’re going to be a reality star like me. Congratulations.”

Shocked and “happy as a pig in shit,” Nikic immediately called his Uncle Bobby, his co-star as well as the namesake of the show.

“So, when do I cash the check?” Bobby asked.

After weeks of competition, Nikic can finally breathe easier knowing he’s now the official winner of MTV’s hunt for a new reality star.

Nikic grew increasingly nervous since that Tuesday’s episode, knowing the fate of his show rested in the voters’ hands. He expected the winner to be announced on the Tuesday episode of the show and was surprised to receive the winning phone call four days earlier.

“Even though I’d found out, I still didn’t believe it,” Nikic said. “Like, I’m still in that stage where I don’t believe what’s going to happen. It’s surreal, I guess.”

His disbelief will have to end soon. If everything goes according to plan, MTV will begin filming Nikic’s reality show on campus as early as spring semester. His plans for the show remain in the developing stages, but he did note he has “so many ideas going through my head” and “when I really have time to sit down and think about, I’m gonna come up with some funny things.”

He plans for the show to revolve around his life both at home and school, and although Uncle Bobby’s role will be downplayed this time around because he lives and works in Queens, he doesn’t rule out a possible cameo from his most famous relative.

However, fame and fortune seem to be of minimal interest to the outspoken uncle. He’s content enough to know his nephew is successful, and he’s just happy to be along for the ride.

“I’ll take everything, don’t get me wrong. But the bottom line is that I want him to succeed,” he said. “Because I’m living my life through him right now. Because those are the best years you could have at this age. I wish I could go back, but I can’t. So I hope he learns from my mistakes.”

Two things are for certain: Uncle Bobby never doubted Nikic’s chances at winning the show and has little concern for Nikic’s success in the future.

“I have the utmost confidence in my nephew. When he puts his heart into something, he always gets what he wants,” Uncle Bobby said. “He’s a go-getter. He’s not a lazy bastard. I was dealt the ‘sloozing’ hand, he was dealt the working hand.”

Though Uncle Bobby has given Nikic plenty of insightful advice over the years, he believes the best words of wisdom he ever gave him was to go to college.

“[I told him] go to Northeastern University,” he said. “Get out of this friggin’ rathole.”
