Lights, camera, action – action-packed, that is.
As Hollywood once again prepares for the summer movie season, students are expecting a lot of fast-paced action movies mixed in with a bit of romance.
“I think that’s the telltale of summer blockbusters, high action entertainment, and I like that,” said Ryan Kelley, a junior marketing major.
Students like middler physical therapy major Tim Laughlin said they are not surprised by the action and are looking forward to the movies.
“Summer flicks tend to be filled with action and drama; things blow up, everything happens, like ‘War of The Worlds’ which was very big last summer,” Laughlin said. “I like the action genre. Summer movies are known for that and they don’t need to change.”
But for students like middler physical therapy major Ashleigh Bordwell, there’s another draw to the movies – the actors.
“I would like to watch ‘The Break Up’ because I think Vince Vaughn is so dreamy,” she said.
With all the new blockbusters out there it may be tough to know what is what. But The News has got you covered this summer with a list of some of the hottest movies (and actors) to hit the big screen.

The Da Vinci Code – In theatres
Featuring: Tom Hanks, Audrey Tautou, Ian McKellen, Jean Reno and Alfred Molina
Directed by: Ron Howard
This film, based on the best-selling novel by Dan Brown, has caused a worldwide stir. The movie begins with a murder in the Louvre, which brings together a Harvard professor (Hanks) and a French cryptologist (Tautou) who discover a secret society and unravel the hidden details of a relationship between Jesus and Mary Magdalene.
Over the Hedge – In theatres
Featuring voices by: Bruce Willis, Garry Shandling, Steve Carell, William
Shatner and Wanda Sykes
Directed by: Tim Johnson and Karey Kirkpatrick
After a winter of hibernation, a group of woodland creatures wakes up to find their home has become a backyard in the suburbs in this animated comedy. They meet RJ the raccoon (Willis) who soon turns the animals on to the rewards of suburban living: Garbage.
X-Men: The Last Stand – May 26
Featuring: Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Ian McKellen, Famke Janssen, Patrick Stewart, Rebecca Romijn, Kelsey Grammer and Anna Paquin
Directed by: Brett Ratner
This third and possibly final X-Men movie brings back the old gang, including Wolverine (Jackman), Storm (Berry), Jean Grey (Janssen), Magneto (McKellen) and Professor Xavier (Stewart), and introduces a couple of new X-Men: Beast (Grammer), Angel, Juggernaut and Kitty Pryde. The film involves the resurrection of Jean Grey and the discovery of a cure for the mutant gene, which causes a fierce debate between the characters new and old.
The Break-Up – June 2
Featuring: Vince Vaughn, Jennifer Aniston, Joey Lauren Adams, Ann-Margret, Jason Bateman and John Favreau
Directed by: Peyton Reed
Vaughn and Aniston team up to play a couple who call it quits but are unwilling to give up the Chicago condo they bought together. The romantic comedy is receiving a lot of attention mostly because of the rumored real-life relationship between the starring duo.

Featuring: Adam Sandler, Kate Beckinsale, Christopher Walken, David Hasselhoff and Sean Astin
Directed by: Frank Coraci
The film focuses on Michael Newman (Sandler), a workaholic architect, who receives a truly “universal” remote that allows him to pause, rewind and fast-forward his life. However, Michael soon finds his life fast-forwarding past him. Walken plays the high-energy creator of the remote and Beckinsale portray’s Michael’s wife.
Superman Returns – June 30
Featuring: Brandon Routh, Kate Bosworth, Kevin Spacey, James Marsden, Frank Langella, Eva Marie Saint and Parker Posey
Directed by: Bryan Singer
Singer, director of the first two X-Men movies, declined directing the third installment to take the helm of this film, which picks up the Superman plot line after a hiatus of more than 20 years. Superman (Routh) returns from a visit to Krypton and finds out that Lois (Bosworth) has a child. Spacey plays nemesis Lex Luthor, who is back to his evil schemes.
The Devil Wears Prada – June 30
Featuring: Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci, Simon Baker, Emily Blunt and Adrian Grenier
Directed by: David Frankel
Streep plays Miranda Priestly, the fashion editor of a major magazine, who makes life miserable for her assistant (Hathaway). Fashion fans will appreciate designs from Chanel, Valentino, Donna Karen, Marc Jacobs, Jimmy Choo, Gucci and, of course, Prada, which are featured throughout the film, which is based on the novel by Lauren Weisberger.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest – July 7
Featuring: Johnny Depp, Keira Knightly, Orlando Bloom, Bill Nighy and Stellan Skarsgard
Directed by: Gore Verbinski
This sequel to the mega-hit (Curse of the Black Pearl) was shot simultaneously with the third in the series. In this film Will (Bloom) and Elizabeth (Knightly) make wedding plans that go awry when Jack Sparrow (Depp) returns owing a debt to the infamous sea captain Davy Jones.
Monster House – July 21
Featuring: Steve Buscemi, Nick Cannon, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kevin James, Jason Lee, Catherine O’Hara, Kathleen Turner, Fred Willard and Mitchel Musso
Directed by: Gil Kenan
The film focuses on a frightening and mysterious house that bullies the boy who lives across the street (Musso). Not only did the actors of this animated feature lend their voices to the on-screen characters, they also wore reflective spheres on their faces and bodies during filming for the advanced motion-capture animation technique used in The Polar Express.
Snakes on a Plane – August 18
Featuring: Samuel L. Jackson, Bryon Lawson, Julianna Marguiles and Nathan Phillips.
Directed by: David R. Ellis
Jackson stars as an FBI agent escorting a young witness to L.A. to testify in a crime case when a mob boss tries to bring down their plane with hundreds of venomous snakes. The movie may be gaining publicity and interest more for its title than its plot but critics say it has the potential to flop.
