Northeastern University crime rates significantly decreased from 2014 to 2016, according to the university police department’s annual safety report.
The total number of incidents in the Northeastern University Police Department (NUPD) report declined by more than half from 1,156 in 2014 to 721 in 2016. Disciplinary referrals for liquor law violations — the category with the most incidents in each of the last three years — decreased from 619 in 2014 to 449 in 2016.
There were three more reported rape incidents in 2016 than in 2015. Since 2014, however, the amount of forcible sex offenses reported each year has decreased.
No crimes were reported on any of Northeastern’s satellite campuses in Charlotte, North Carolina, Seattle and Silicon Valley, according to their respective annual safety reports. A university official did not respond to an interview request and a university spokesperson did not respond to a request for an interview with an NUPD official by publication time.
Under the federal Jeanne Clery Act, higher education institutions that participate in federal financial aid programs must keep and release information about crimes committed on and around campus each year.
