By Jewel Della Valle

The men’s and women’s crew teams competed at the Eastern Sprints May 13 and didn’t fare as well as they hoped. The women’s team made the Grand Final, but fell to five Ivy League Schools to take home sixth place.

The men’s team, failing to make the Grand Final race for the second time in seven years, finished 10th overall. The men’s team also competed in the Burk Cup Saturday and defeated Pennsylvania by 2.4 seconds on the Charles River with a time of 5:54.7. The second varsity also took home first, winning by six seconds.

At the Eastern Sprints, the men’s varsity eight took to the waters of Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester and fell behind the Brown crew from the start of the final heat. The No. 3 Brown Bears finished at 5:35.4, with No. 4 Princeton in second and the Huskies in third with a time of 5:42.2. The Huskies also rowed in the Petite Final, where they finished fourth behind Cornell, Boston University and Pennsylvania.

The second varsity eight finished eighth overall and placed third in the second heat of the varsity eight race. The freshman eight took home the only NU first-place finish of the day, defeating Yale, Cornell, Rutgers and Dartmouth in the third heat of the freshman eight race, with a time of 5:45.4.

The women’s varsity eight qualified for the final race after falling to Yale in the first heat by just under four seconds, but beating Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Rutgers and MIT, who finished third through sixth, respectively.

The varsity four placed sixth in the Grand Final after finishing second behind Radcliffe to qualify.

The second varsity eight won the Petite Final, but finished seventh on the day after falling to Brown and Pennsylvania in the first second varsity heat.

The novice eight placed third in the heat behind Pennsylvania and Rutgers, and took fifth in the Petite Final to finish 11th overall on the day.

This weekend, the team will compete at the NCAA Championship in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
