Men’s Soccer adds eight recruits

After a strong finish to the 2006 season, the men’s soccer team took a step toward continuing that success as head coach Brian Ainscough announced the signing of eight recruits.

Santiago Bedoya (Weston, Fla.) is a midfielder from St. Thomas Aquinas High School who notched eight goals and 10 assists his senior year. Joining him will be Massachusetts residents Adrian Kawuba (Watertown) and Nick Lueders (Needham).

Kawuba is originally from Uganda, but attended Lexington Christian Academy and was a 2006 Boston Globe Prep All-Scholastic selection. Lueders has breakaway speed and was named to the Bay State Carey League All-Star team in 2005.

Also joining the Huskies will be midfielders Alex McLean (Silver Spring, Md.) Oliver Nowalski (San Jose, Costa Rica) and Matt Pentkowski (Clifton Park, N.Y.).

McLean led Montgomery Blair High School to a 12-2 record as captain his senior year. Nowalski played for Blue Valley High School in San Jose and brings a high level of soccer intelligence to the midfield. Pentkowski attended Wilbraham ‘ Monson Academy and led his team to a New England Prep School Class B Tournament title in 2006.

On defense, Jeremy Klein (Needham) and Matt Sanford (Princeton, N.J.) will join the Husky squad in the fall. Klein played with Lueders at Needham High School and captained the team his senior year. Sanford attended The Hun School of Princeton and battled back from an injury to help lead the team to a Mercer County Tournament championship in 2006.

The Huskies finished the 2006 season with a record of 8-10-2. The 2007 season starts Sept. 1, when NU travels down Rt. 91 to face non-conference foe Quinnipiac.

Schuler signs three for 2007

Head coach Laura Schuler of the women’s hockey team announced the signing of three more players to National Letters of Intent.

Forward Lori Antflick (Thornhill, Ontario), goaltender Leah Sulyma (Inuvik, Northwest Territories) and defenseman Ashley Wiater (Upper Holland, Pa.) will all join the Lady Huskies next season and look to bolster a team, which finished seventh in the competitive Hockey East last year.

Antflick played with the Durham Jr. Lightning in 2006-07, finishing with 20 points (8-12). Prior to that, she played for the Etobicoke Jr. Dolphins for two seasons, helping the team earn its first-ever Etobicoke Tournament Title in 2004-05.

Sulyma was a stalwart between the pipes for St. Albert last season, as she posted a sparkling 2.06 goals against average to go along with a .938 save percentage. The team posted a record of 9-2-5 with her in the net. In the 2007 Canada Winter Games, Sulyma did her best Robert Luongo impression, posting a 90-save game against Manitoba and a 104-save game against Alberta, while leading her team to its first-ever victory at the Winter Games against Yukon.

Wiater spent the last three seasons playing for the Taft School and the Connecticut Polar Bears. She was the captain of the Taft Under-19 squad in each of her final two seasons and finished the 2005-06 season with 15 goals and 25 assists before missing the 2006-07 season because of an injury. With Connecticut, she led the Polar Bears to the 2006 National semifinals and had a 40-5-1 overall record.

These three recruits will join Kristi Kehoe, Autumn Prouty and Alyssa Wohlfeiler of the California Selects team, who signed with the Huskies during the early recruiting period.

Field Hockey signs seven

Head coach Cheryl Murtagh announced the field hockey team’s 2007 recruiting class, which includes three defensemen, two midfielders and two forwards.

Katrina Murray (Rumson, N.J.), Kristi Padavano (Voorhees, N.J.) and Anne-Reike Stuhlmann (Hamburg, Germany) will all bolster NU’s defensive corps.

Murray played four seasons for The Hun School of Princeton, serving as captain her senior year. Padavano took the field for two seasons of varsity field hockey at Eastern High School in New Jersey, earning second team All-Olympic Conference honors in her final season.

Stuhlmann played for the last nine seasons with Helene-Lange Gymnasium, serving as team captain for her final three seasons while earning three All-Hamburg State selections.

Pam Aldridge (Richmond, British Columbia) and Keelin Quinn (Walpole) will look to compete for playing time in the midfield slots.

Aldridge played varsity field hockey for five seasons at Hugh McRoberts Secondary School and scored the game winning goal in overtime in the AAA high school provincial game. Quinn spent the last four years playing for Walpole High School, captaining the team her senior season. She scored the only goal in the 2006 Div. 1 Championship game to give Walpole its 10th state title.

Emma Boggio (North Vancouver, British Columbia) and Katie Ruth (Glendora, Calif.) will add depth to the forward position.

Boggio played the last three seasons with Sentinel Secondary School in British Columbia and led her league in scoring in 2006. Ruth played for Glendora High School, netting a goal in her team’s victory in the 2006 Los Angeles Tournament of Champions.

The Huskies, who finished the 2006 season 10-12, advancing to the quarterfinals of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament to top-seeded Old Dominion, will face a challenging schedule this fall, which includes five conference champions and six NCAA Tournament teams.
