The Northeastern Progressive Student Alliance (NUPSA) which is showing its support in the “justice for janitors” cause is not seeing the big picture.
While many students continue to support a cause which on the surface seems to be a noble one, they still are missing the point.
During President Richard Freeland’s State of the University Address, where the president spoke of NU’s commitment to becoming a top 100 university and showing the progress of NU’s upward climb towards respectability, two students who took active part in the janitor rallies walked directly in front of Freeland and held a sign “Justice for Janitors.”
The act was embarrassing to the student body and was deemed inappropriate by the many on hand. The act was also incorrectly done.
While President Freeland heads the university and its functions, the groups that NUPSA should direct their anger and voice towards is the Consolidated Cleaning Company which Northeastern uses as their cleaning service provider, and UNICCO which heads the cleaning services at the Hancock Tower.
Those companies decide whether or not the janitors receive health care or not and what wages the janitors will receive.
Perhaps the students should look into a cause they know a little more about and not just look for an excuse to quibble with the NU community.
