Northover earns spot at NCAA Championsips Senior thrower Zara Northover and junior hurdler Tramaine Shaw traveled to Gainesville, Fla., to compete in the Track ‘ Field NCAA East Regional Championship May 25. Both athletes were honored at the 2007 Colonial Athletic Association Championships (CAA) April 21, where Northeastern claimed its first CAA victory. Northover was named Most Outstanding Field Performer while Shaw was named Co-Most Outstanding Track Performer.

In Florida, the athletes claimed 22nd place out of 56 teams. Shaw placed 26th in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 14.14 seconds. In the 400-meter hurdles, she placed 20th in 1:01.38 seconds. She later went on to place 28th in the high jump event, reaching a height of 5.60 meters.

Northover placed 2nd in the shot put, throwing a distance of 16.59 meters.

“Before entering the meet I had a good feeling,” Northover said. “I knew it was going to be all or nothing.”

This weekend, Northover will travel across the country to compete in the NCAA Championships in Sacramento, Calif. Northover will be the first shot putter to throw at the meet, as she is the first thrower in the first flight of the preliminaries Thursday starting at 10:15 p.m.

Northover said she is preparing for this meet as she has every other in her career.

“I think the biggest mistake a lot of people make is they try to do different things.” she said. “This is my last meet colliegiately, it has a lot riding on it. On every throw I just want to go out and do my best, and do my team, my parents and myself proud.”

Men’s track season ends at NCAA East Regionals The remainder of the Northeastern men’s track season was completed May 25-26 at the NCAA East Regionals in Gainesville, Fla. Three Huskies competed in the event, but none qualified for NCAA Division I Championships.

Sophomore Nate Hunter finished 15th in the shot put with a personal best throw of 56 feet, 7.25 inches. Hunter also competed in the discus, finishing 16th with a throw of 152 feet.

Junior Bamidele Faboyede competed in the hammer throw, finishing 19th with a 183-foot, 4-inch toss.

Freshman Jordan Thull was unable to clear the opening height in the pole vault.
