Injuries hurt Huskies’ chance at a winning start

By Andrew Parente

Northeastern was unable to overcome two quick goals and were shut out by Boston University 3-0 Monday night at Nickerson Field.

Junior forward Petur Sigurdsson was the beneficiary of a strange rebound that came off the crossbar and fooled Northeastern goalie Scott Partridge, who made his first start for the Huskies. The goal, which came at the 11:24 mark, was followed just 34 seconds later when BU defenseman Jon Jonsson sent in a cross that was headed in by Sigurdsson for his second goal of the night.

Northeastern, who was shut out for the second consecutive game after losing 2-0 at Quinnipiac Saturday, is feeling the effects of injuries, forcing some to play out of position.

“It’s early in the season, we got some guys banged up, so we’re making some adjustments to see what works and we have people in positions that they are not really comfortable playing in,” said head coach Brian Ainscough. “You make one adjustment and it hurts you in another department, and that’s what really got us early in the game.”

Some of the adjustments did appear to pay off as the Huskies started the second half with much more intensity and were able to come up with a few scoring opportunities.

Two minutes into the half, senior forward Ahmed Talaat was able to get a shot off from inside the 18 yard box that beat Terrier goalie Hrafn Davidsson. However, a BU defender was backing up the play and cleared the shot.

From that point on the Huskies were only able to manage any more shots on goal, totaling four for the game, and giving Davidsson his first shutout of the season.

The game was back and forth for much of the second half until the 74th minute when BU forward Aaron O’Neil slipped in behind the defense and headed the ball into the net off a strike from midfielder Ryan Shea at 25 yards out. That gave the Terriers a 3-0 advantage, sealing their first win of the season.

One critical injury for the Huskies was sophomore midfielder Alexander Volk, who was named to the All-Colonial Athletic Association pre-season team, along with senior forward Greg Kilkenny. Volk’s injury forced Kilkenny to play out of his regular position.

“Once we can get Alex back on the field and are able to put Greg back up to forward, we can feel positive and get things right,” Ainscough said.

Northeastern will look to get its first win when they travel to Providence to take on the Friars Friday at 3 p.m. The Huskies will then battle with Maine at 1 p.m. Sunday in the home opener at Parsons Field.
