Comics tell it uncensored

By Mike Devine

Laughter echoed through Blackman Auditorium as comedians Seth Meyers and Jamie Kennedy performed for a sold-out crowd Saturday night.

The Night of Comedy, an annual event sponsored by the Council for University Programs (CUP), Alpha Epsilon Pi and Sigma Phi Epsilon, was organized as part of Northeastern’s Welcome Week 2007.

Meyers, head writer for “Saturday Night Live” (SNL), kicked off the two-hour event by proclaiming the freshman class as his favorite, and then mocking the middler class for their “made-up” name.

Meyers touched on studying abroad, Amsterdam, camping, and weird things bought on eBay, among other topics during his act.

He discussed technology, in particular cell phones and text messaging.

“The fact that I’m still with Sprint is like I’m in an abusive relationship,” he said.

Meyers also joked about the recent controversy involving two Northeastern freshmen who were caught running a marijuana business from a residence hall room. This comment generated the most audience laughter.

“It’s stories like these that make me wish [“SNL” was] on the air over the summer,” he said.

Drawing on his stockpile of material from “SNL,” Meyers poked fun at Ashlee Simpson’s lip-synching incident and even reenacted her infamous jig through his act.

He also read aloud some jokes that did not make the cut for the “Weekend Update” segment on “SNL” due to censorship. The targets of the jokes ranged from President George Bush and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie.

After Meyers left the stage to thunderous applause, Kennedy was welcomed with equal enthusiasm.

Kennedy, known for his role in the film “Enemy of the State” and television “Jamie Kennedy: Unwashed,” focused on racial stereotypes about Mexican and Japanese pilots.

In discussing previous air travel experiences, Kennedy said there’s nothing scarier than hearing pilots talk about turbulence in another language.

Referencing a Japanese pilot’s warning of turbulence on a flight from Japan, he said, “This guy thinks Godzilla’s in the cockpit.”

Kennedy compared himself to Ashton Kutcher, noting that people often say to him, “Jamie, you’ve been punk’d!”

“I hate [Ashton]. He stole all my good ideas
