Women’s Track and Field: Northover ends career at NCAA Championship

By Cynthia Retamozo

In her last collegiate meet, senior thrower Zara Northover traveled across the country to Sacramento, Calif., to compete in the NCAA Championship June 9. There, Northover placed 10th in the shot put throwing a distance of 51’3. This was Northover’s fourth time at a NCAA Championship. As a sophomore in 2004, she placed 12th overall.

In her final year as a Husky, Northover set several meet records. After winning the shot put, discus and hammer events and setting a new meet record of 53’2.25 in the shot put, she was named Most Outstanding Field Performer at the Colonial Athletic Association Championship (CAA) April 20-21, the first conference championship Northeastern has won since moving to the CAA in 2005. At the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship (ECACC) May 11-13, Northover set a new Northeastern record and ECACC record with her shot put throw of 55’0.75.

Northover, who has dual citizenship in the United States and Jamaica, will be competing internationally this summer representing Jamaica. After graduating, she plans to try and qualify for the 2008 Olympics and has plans to work in the athletic director field for college athletics.

As a parting message to her teammates, Northover offered some sound advice.

“Set high goals,” she said. “People have expectations, and to really show them you have to exceed them.”
