Letter to the Editor: Students deserve recognition too

By Matt Collette

In the recent issue of the Northeastern Alumni magazine, President Joseph Aoun said his favorite thing about being president of Northeastern has been “meeting members of the community – the faculty, the staff, the trustees, city leaders, community leaders and leaders of various institutions and organizations.”

I doubt President Aoun meant to do this, but he forgot what I’d always figured to be the most important part of the Northeastern community: the student body. I don’t think Aoun meant to give us the cold shoulder – he’s met me before and since has greeted me by name. But still, it kind of stung. Plus, there are some 14,000 undergrads (in addition to the multitude of graduate and night students), so we’re pretty hard to miss.

Aoun, I know some of us are annoying, but we don’t all sell pot out our windows or flip over cars after big sports victories. Most of us are pretty cool people, the kind whose tuition pays for your Beacon Hill townhouse and most of the view from your sixth floor Columbus Avenue office.

Maybe students aren’t the Alumni magazine’s target audience, but you put it in our residence hall lobbies, so some of us are probably going to pick it up and read it.
