BRC funds Deaf Club and National Chemistry Week

At its Sept. 12 meeting, the Budget Review Committee (BRC) approved funding requests for two student programs. About $4,700 was allocated to the Northeastern University Deaf Club to fund a program Dec. 6 called Curtis Pride Night. At the event, Curtis Pride, a deaf professional baseball player, will speak about his experiences and sign autographs at the event. Northeastern’s student affiliate chapter of the American Chemical Society (NUACS) was also allocated about $500 to celebrate National Chemistry Week Oct. 24 and Oct. 25. NUACS will do various demonstrations like making ice cream with liquid nitrogen. – Kate Augusto, News Staff

NU to collect, systemize human trafficking data

Northeastern’s Institute of Race and Justice will create and employ the first data collection and reporting system on cases of human trafficking, according to a Northeastern press release. The Human Trafficking Reporting System will be created and sent to human trafficking task forces through the United States beginning in January. The system is funded by a $440,448 grant from the Bureau of Justice Statistics and will be implemented in collaboration with the Urban Institute in Washington, D.C. – Kate Augusto, News Staff

Northeastern funds research cancer detection

Northeastern is one of seven universities funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to develop an initiative that promotes the understanding of cancer risk and detection. The NCI is providing $15.5 million during five years to validate cancer biomarkers by targeting the carbohydrate part of a molecule, according to a Northeastern press release that came out earlier this month. The work is led by a professor from Barnett Institute and will focus on breast cancer. – Kate Augusto, News Staff
